When eloping at a waterfall, it’s important to consider the logistics of the location and time of year! Some waterfalls dry up significantly if not altogether in the heat of the summer, and then they freeze over in the winter! Here are the BEST seasons to have a waterfall elopement in:

Spring: A popular time to visit the White Mountains, and for good reason. In addition to the beautiful waterfalls, the mountains are alive with vibrant wildflowers and wildlife. It’s the perfect season for a romantic hike or picnic in the great outdoors. Just be prepared for the possibility of mud or wet trails due to the melting snow and spring rain. It’s also important to pack appropriate layers and gear, as the weather can still be unpredictable in the mountains. But with the right preparation, a springtime elopement at a White Mountains waterfall is a truly magical and memorable experience.

Fall: Fall is another beautiful season to consider for a waterfall elopement in the White Mountains. The changing colors of the leaves provide a stunning backdrop for your ceremony and photos. Plus the mild temperatures can make for a comfortable and enjoyable outdoor experience. Just make sure to plan ahead for any potential weather changes and pack accordingly as it can range from warm and sunny to cold and breezy! Just be prepared as Autumn in New Hampshire tends to be the most popular season for visitors – because that fall foliage is POPPIN!

With proper planning and preparation, you can have an incredible elopement with all the best memories. Here are a few tips for having a waterfall elopement in the White Mountains of New Hampshire:

Tips for a White Mountains Waterfall Elopement

1. Hire a local photographer: First and foremost, hire someone who knows all the ins and outs of eloping in New Hampshire. Having someone who is familiar with the area and can capture the best shots is worth it! They also can give you insight into the best time/locations for the area, as well as important logistics like permits and trail info!
2. Pack smart: Bring appropriate footwear for hiking and walking on potentially slippery or muddy terrain. Bring layers and warm clothing, even in the spring and fall, as the weather can be unpredictable. Pack extras like umbrellas, waterproof bags, coats, etc. Don’t forget to pack your vow books in something to keep it from getting wet!
3. Have backup plans: In any season, having at least one backup option for your outdoor elopement is ideal! You never know what the weather is going to bring, or if there are any road/park closures at your desired location! This is something I go over with my clients in our planning calls so we’re all prepared!
4. Get ready in advance. Do as much as you can like hair/makeup before hitting the trails, and be sure and let your HMOA know so they can style and secure your hair/makeup in preperation for wet conditions!
5. Book local accommodation. Consider staying in a nearby cabin or lodge for a cozy and romantic getaway. Having a comfy place nearby to go back to after your elopement saves lots of time and hassle! Consider book a rental property for at least 2 days so you can also get ready there the day of and not worry about checking out or packing up before your elopement!
