How to choose your elopement dress can be one of the more questionable items on your list when planning your elopement. There are a huge variety of elopement dresses out there screaming at you to “choose me choose me!”. It can be a bit overwhelming finding something that is going to fit the vibe of your elopement. Not only that, but trends come and go, so you want something that will be timeless. Something that you’ll forever be excited about.
There are a few variables that will help determine the elopement dress you choose. Mainly the location, timing, and weather conditions are going to be a huge factor.
However, just know that whatever you choose, there is no wrong or right dress. It’s truly whatever you feel the most comfortable and beautiful in, and not just about functionality! Let’s get into it!
The season of your elopement plays a major role in your dress choice. A lightweight, flowy gown might be perfect for a summer mountain elopement, while a long-sleeved lace dress could be ideal for a cozy winter elopement. Think about fabrics that will work best for the weather—chiffon and silk are breathable for warm days, while velvet or heavier lace can provide warmth for colder climates. Layers, such as capes or shawls, can also add versatility.
Your dress should match the type of landscape you’ll be exploring. If you’re eloping on a beach, a long train might drag through the sand, while a fitted gown might restrict movement for a hike in the mountains. Consider dresses with slits for easier movement or shorter hemlines if you’ll be walking through rugged terrain. Flowing fabrics tend to look beautiful in the wind and can create stunning movement in photos.
Are you hiking to your ceremony spot, hopping in a helicopter, or off-roading to a remote location? The level of adventure you have planned will influence how practical your dress needs to be. If you’re planning to change outfits, then you can have a more intricate gown for the ceremony and a more adventure-friendly dress for exploring. A two-piece dress or one with detachable elements can also give you flexibility.
It can be a great idea to start out by trying on wedding or elopement dresses in-store, because that way you can get an idea of your dress size, and what style suits you best. But don’t be afraid to look outside the box (or in this case the box store!) Tons of online bridal shops have gorgeous elopement dresses, or even dresses that aren’t even “bridal” or wedding-specific. If you’re not loving what you’re finding, or have something super specific in mind then consider having one custom-made through Etsy or a local tailor!
While most all of us use Pinterest to at least browse inspo, you can actually SHOP on Pinterest now! If you search for a specific style of dress you’ll find photos that link directly to a store to purchase it from online! And if you find an elopement dress in a photo you LOVE – hit the “explore” option next to the photo and you’ll be directed to similar photos often with dresses to purchase! Online elopement dress shopping has never been easier!
At the end of the day, the best dress is the one that makes you feel incredible while allowing you to enjoy your elopement to the fullest!
Alright, first things first. Before even going into dresses, the types and where to get them, let’s talk about how you plan to purchase one. With larger weddings, there is a tradition to bring those who are closest to you. Some feel pressured to invite their aunt, or their friends. But as I say with everything elopements – throw out the damn traditions and start from scratch! Do whatever YOU want to do.
Have you heard the stories like I have about a bride loving the dress, to then have her mom ruin the experience for her? Or the friend gets jealous and shows up to this moment in a bad mood? Honestly, I can’t even deal with that crap. So here’s the deal…
One of the best things about elopements? There are no rules—especially when it comes to what you wear. Whether you’re dreaming of a flowy boho gown, a sleek modern dress, or even a chic jumpsuit, the perfect elopement outfit is out there waiting for you. Here’s where to look:
Even if you’re eloping, don’t skip the bridal boutiques! These small, curated shops often carry unique styles that work beautifully for adventure elopements. Plus, you get the full experience by being able to try on dresses with a stylist’s guidance. Bonus tip: Let them know you’re eloping! Many boutiques have lightweight, travel-friendly options perfect for hiking, beach, or mountaintop vows.
If you’re looking for something a little less traditional (or on a tighter timeline), online bridal retailers are a great option. Stores like BHLDN, Reformation, Grace Loves Lace, and Lulu’s offer beautiful, elopement-friendly styles, and many are made for comfort and movement. Just be sure to check return policies and order well in advance in case you need alterations.
Sustainability meets affordability when you shop secondhand! Sites like Stillwhite, Nearly Newlywed, and Poshmark have designer gowns at a fraction of the price. Plus, vintage shops and thrift stores sometimes have hidden gems just waiting to be reimagined for an elopement.
If you have a specific vision, working with an independent designer could be the perfect option. Designers on Etsy or small brands like Wear Your Love specialize in handcrafted, made-to-measure dresses that feel as unique as your love story.
Who says you have to wear a wedding dress? Brands like Free People, ASOS, and Needle & Thread have stunning white dresses, jumpsuits, and two-piece sets that are perfect for a non-traditional elopement look. Plus, they’re often more affordable and can be worn again.
No matter where you shop, keep in mind how your dress will feel on your elopement day. Will it be easy to move in? Does it fit the vibe of your location? Most importantly, does it make you feel amazing? If the answer is yes—then you’ve found the one.
Choosing the style of your elopement dress is all about finding something that makes you feel amazing and fits the vibe of your day. Whether you’re dreaming of twirling on a mountaintop or strolling barefoot on the beach, there’s a dress style that’s perfect for your adventure. Here’s a breakdown of popular types of elopement dresses to help you find the one:
Best for: Beach, forest, or desert elopements
Best for: Any location, especially if you want a bit of structure

The fabric of your elopement dress isn’t just about looks—it affects how comfortable you’ll be, how easily you can move, and how well it travels. Whether you’re hiking to your ceremony spot, trying to catch a breeze on the beach, or bundling up for a winter elopement, the right material makes all the difference. Here’s what to know about some common fabrics:
Best for: Warm-weather elopements, beach or desert locations
Best for: Intimate city elopements, formal settings
Best for: Boho, woodland, or mountain elopements
Best for: Fairytale vibes, soft and romantic settings
Best for: Minimalist or modern elopements
Best for: Windy or dramatic outdoor locations
Best for: Fall or winter elopements
✔ Think about your location: Will it be hot, cold, windy, or humid? Choose a fabric that works with the climate.
✔ Consider movement: If you’ll be hiking or exploring, opt for something lightweight with a bit of stretch.
✔ Packability matters: If you’re traveling, look for fabrics that resist wrinkles or can be easily steamed.
✔ Trust how you feel: The best fabric is the one that makes you feel comfortable, confident, and free to enjoy your elopement day.
No matter which material you choose, the most important thing is that your dress lets you move, explore, and fully soak in every moment of your elopement.
Okay so you’ve got your dress (or have an idea of what you want to get), what about the logistics of carrying it and putting it on?! Whether you’re hiking 10 miles or walking 10 steps to your ceremony spot, an elopement dress can be brought just about anywhere. Yes, even the traditional gowns with long trains and all the tulle! Some brides choose to pack theirs away in their backpacks, or hanging it in a bag during a trek. In comparison, others choose to wear it for the whole adventure! This really depends on how comfy you are with hiking, and how long of a trail it is, plus the weather is always to be considered!
So whether you choose to get ready ahead of time or change on the trail, you have the flexibility to choose whatever makes the most sense to you!! And if you’re not sure, as your elopement photographer I can help you decide what the best option is for your location/season!
