10 Tips for Taking Care of Yourself as a Photographer

1. Prioritize Physical Health

Whether you’re a mountain climbing adventure elopement photographer like me, or shooting traditional 8-10 hour wedding days; staying on top of your physical health is crucial. You need to train your body for long shooting days and learn how to recover well and maintain healthy routines during editing marathons! Tips for how to prioritize you health:

  • Move how you like: Find ways to exercise and train in a way that you LOVE. Dancing, cycling, walking, yoga, etc. Choose something that isn’t a chore
  • Stretch and Move Regularly: Include a list of simple stretches and exercises to counteract long hours of standing or editing.
  • Proper Posture: Tips for avoiding back and neck strain when carrying gear or sitting at a desk. Get regular massages and chiropractor adjustments during bthe usy season!

2. Maintain a Balanced Diet

I know how hard it can be to even think about grocery shopping or cooking dinner after a long day of editing or shooting. Plan in advance and your future self will thank you! Tips for how to maintain a balanced diet:

  • Get healthy Snacks: Quick, portable options for busy shoots.
  • Stay Hydrated: Emphasize the importance of water and suggest adding electrolytes during long events.
  • Meal plan/prep: Or consider a meal prep service for your busy season!

3. Optimize Sleep

This may fluctuate with busy seasons, whether you shoot late weddings or travel to/from elopements. But if/when you can – REST! Prioritize sleeping 7-9 hours at night and even squeezing in a nap! Tips for how to optimize sleep:

  • Have boundaries: Even during busy wedding seasons, set a schedule for when your working hours start and end.
  • Have a tech free zone: Make your sleeping space calm and blue-light free!

4. Manage Mental Health

Mental and physical health go hand in hand in your overall wellness. Make plans for how to support your mental health when things start to get overwhelming. Tips for how to manage mental health:

  • Stress Management Techniques: Meditation, deep breathing exercises, or journaling.
  • Work-Life Balance: Set boundaries to protect personal time.

As photographers, we use our eyes a lotttt. Like it’s the focal point of our business, in shooting and editing alike. Maintaining proper eye care is crucial for your health and the longevity of your biz! Tips for maintaining eye care:

  • Take breaks: from screens to avoid digital eye strain.
