Not Getting Booked in Your Photography Business?

No photographer wants to look at their calendar and think, Uh… where are all my bookings? But if that’s you right now—take a deep breath. You’re not alone. In this quick guide we’ll go over what to do when you’re not booked out!

2025 has been a weird year for photographers across the board. With economic uncertainty, couples are being more cautious with their wedding and elopement plans. This means bookings might not be rolling in like they used to. But here’s the thing: weddings and elopements aren’t disappearing. People will always get married, and they will always need a photographer. That’s where you come in!

So, instead of panicking, let’s focus on what you can do. This guide will help you stay proactive, motivated, and ready to turn things around. You’ve got this!

What to Do When You’re Not Getting Booked

Okay weird year, politics, and the economy aside: it’s time to take a deep dive into all aspects of your business to see if there’s any way we can boost your booking rate!

Before we get into it, there are a few key metrics you need to know before you start working on things. Because… what do you actually work on?

We need to fully understand what’s not hitting with your ideal client.

  • Is it your messaging? AKA are people clicking on your website but not inquiring?
  • Are you just not getting enough website clicks? (Hint: your goal should be to get more than 1,000 clicks per month.
  • Are people inquiring, but then ghosting you?
  • Are you getting people on the phone, but then aren’t converting them into a booking?

Once you understand where things aren’t working, then that’s where you’ll want to start prioritizing on your troubleshooting.

Here are a few ideas for getting started when it comes to what to do when you’re not booked out:

  1. Start with your Website. This should be the main hub of your business (do not rely solely on social media!!) Read through all of your copy, your sales page, check your site loading time, write blogs that speak to your ideal client, and get serious about boosting your SEO on every page! Make sure your branding is cohesive and YOU!
  2. Review your pricing. AND how you present it! The psychology of pricing can be tricky, and its important to evaluate your pricing structure at least annually to make sure it aligns with your goals and the clients you’re trying to reach. 3. Revisit your initial inquiry emails and sales calls. It can be something like a simple fix that will make a massive difference.
  4. Get outside opinions. Ask a friend or other photographer to review your site, even walk them through your booking process. Is there anything offputting, any typos, or a disconnect between your pricing and what you’re offering in terms of value?
  5. Do you have reviews? If not, reach out to past clients and request reviews for your business (that other people can see like on your Google Buisness Profile)
  6. Remind people you’re still here. We’ve got a love-hate relationship with social media these days, but as a personal service provider, showing up to your clients online can really make a huge difference when it comes to building trust-a key step in the booking process!
  7. Hire a coach or join a Mastermind. Seriously. If you’re struggling in your business and can’t figure out what to do on your own – having accountability and community can completely change your business! Sometimes, just a small shift or change in the way you run your business can alter EVERYTHING for the better!

Okay, so you’re reviewing your business workflow, pricing, branding, all the nitty-gritty stuff. Now what? Here are a couple of things you can do to try and quickly boost bookings

  1. Paid Ads: This can reach a large amount of potential clients quickly; you just have to be specific and strategic on who you’re trying to reach for the best results!
  2. Reach out to your Community. This can look like reaching out to other photographers, letting them know you’re available to associate or take on any bookings maybe they’re not available for (some photographers run referral programs where they send you leads they cannot take themselves.) This can also include networking with other vendors (think venues, coordinators, stylists, planners, etc) Let them know you’d love to collaborate or work together in the future.
  3. Run a contest or promo to get more potential clients: It doesn’t have to be a “sale”, but you can do that too if you’re comfortable with it. Otherwise, set up a contest or promo to get more followers on social media, and more potential clients for your business.
  4. Share the heck out of your availability/travel sched! This is a part of the whole showing up on social media thing we all love/hate! But reminding people of what you offer and where you will be can be a huge boost in booking clients around YOUR schedule.

Final Thoughts on What to do when you’re not booked out

If your calendar is looking a little too empty for comfort, don’t take it as a sign to throw in the towel. Take it as an opportunity to pause, reflect, and pivot. Every slow season is a chance to level up your business, get creative, and plant seeds for future growth.

Whether you’re updating your website, adjusting your pricing, reaching out to your community, or showing up more consistently online—remember, this lull won’t last forever. The effort you put in now will pay off.

So if you’ve been wondering what to do when you’re not booked out, consider this your roadmap. Keep moving forward, stay visible, and don’t be afraid to try something new. You’ve built something amazing—and your next wave of dream clients is on the way.

You’ve got this.
