SO what Is the Cost to Run a Wedding Photography Business?

While the final cost to run a wedding photography business varies between locations and biz structure, there are several factors that make up that number. Let’s break it down by category, so you get a clear picture of the typical investments. (PS: These are Updates 2025 cost estimates in the US)

1. Gear & Equipment

This is often the biggest up-front investment. Here’s what I personally use:

Estimated Total Investment: Approximately $15,000 – $18,000

And another note – this is not all necessary to make an investment all at once. You truly do just need your camera gear and proper storage for the photos. Everything else is an added benefit as you make more money!


2. Legal + Administrative

Legal costs are essential for protecting both you and your clients. At a minimum, plan to invest in:

  • Contracts: I recommend The Legal Paige. Her templates are customizable, easy to understand, and written specifically for photographers. Cost: $200-500 per contract
  • Business Insurance
  • Business License and Registration (varies by state/country)

What About the Cost of Running an Elopement Photography Business?

While we just went over the cost to run a wedding photography business, Elopement photography often comes with different financial logistics. You may spend more on travel or gear that works well in rugged outdoor environments (think hiking boots and waterproof covers!), but less on studio space or props. Overall, the cost structure is similar, but how you spend your money will align with your niche and clientele.

And in summary… how much does it cost to run a photography business?

In general, every business owner is different. From what you can see, it can be an investment up front, and year after year! I personally spend between $30k-50k in my photo business year over year. But this is because I’ve decided to outsource a lot, and I spend a good amount on travel as well. You have full control over your business, but as long as you are making at least double that, then your photography business can be a very profitable business for you!

As you can see, the cost to run a photography business can be extensive, and the total number can be variable in the end. BUT -Running a wedding photography business can be profitable and fulfilling. If you treat it like a business from day one. Looking at the numbers, the cost to run a wedding photography business may seem daunting – especially in the beginning. But if you go into it understanding your expenses, managing your money wisely, and investing in the right tools and systems?
